Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young kid. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse in order to give her the chance to learn about art theatre or literature. DuVernay instantly was captivated when she showed her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great instrument for political activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her life, but was able to spend summers with her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. As studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for the broadcast media. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to look-out and search for the house of a particular Jury member. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay got a job right after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. From this position she started her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
